Men's Wedding Bands: Crafting Your Unique Love Story

Men's Wedding Bands: Crafting Your Unique Love Story

Men’s wedding bands are a beautiful component of any love story. Traditionally, men’s wedding bands have been simple in design, with many opting for a solid metal band to signify forever and their commitment to the marriage. However, at Jason Ree, we favour a more historical, and enchanting way to craft men’s wedding bands, and that is through the ancient art of Mokume Gane.

“Made for a Warrior. True love is always worth fighting for”

It’s certainly a love story in itself, Jason Ree loves the complexities and artistry involved in the creation of a Mokume Gane ring. In this blog, we’ll explore the history of Mokume Gane: how it evolved from Samurai swords to jewellery, and what it means for your unique love story.

A History of Mokume Gane

Originally having humble beginnings in sword making in the seventeenth century, Mokume Gane is quite simply, art. Translating to “wood grain metal”, Mokume Gane was initially developed by master swordsmiths creating ornamental fittings for samurai swords: yes, believe it or not, this artwork was created for the warriors of premodern Japan.

The creation process involved layering and bonding multiple layers of different metals, such as gold, and silver, and then manipulating them to reveal intricate patterns resembling wood grain or waves. This complex technique means that no creation is the same, which we believe is the perfect method to represent your love story. Indeed, the ever-rising popularity of Mokume Gane was due to its incredible beauty but also for its symbolism. The craftsmanship required to create these patterns symbolised the skill and dedication of the artisans, while the fusion of different metals represented harmony and unity – concepts deeply ingrained in Japanese culture.

It was during the twentieth century that the artistry of Mokume Gane found its way towards jewellery and jewellery-making, thanks to artisans like Hiroko Sato-Pijanowski and James Binnion. Their work ensured that this creative process would live on long after the last samurai sword was laid down in battle.

Popular Mokume Gane Styles

Today, Mokume Gane continues to captivate artisans and enthusiasts alike, offering a unique blend of artistry, history, and symbolism in every piece. We’ve mentioned that Mokume Gane is a complex work of art, and this is certainly true: each piece will be unlike any other created, despite there being three distinct ways to craft the finished product. These are:

  • Forged - Our beautiful Mokume Gane rings feature cylindrical patterns that intertwine and flow with each other. Created with the infusion of red heat, each ring is truly one of a kind.
  • Twisted - The twisting technique used to create our Mokume Gane rings results in subtle yet stunning patterns of precious metals. Our Starburst style, which is an offshoot of the Twisted pattern, brings symmetry to the fold of metals.
  • Twisted & Forged - A powerful combination of two art forms: our unique forged pattern with the flow of our twisting technique creates a multitude of striking effects and styles.

From bold and intricate patterns to subtle and elegant motifs, At Jason Ree, we can tailor each piece to reflect your unique style and story, making it the perfect choice for a men’s wedding band. We believe that one of the most enchanting aspects of Mokume Gane is its versatility in design. By varying the types of metals used, the number of layers, and the techniques employed,  we can create an infinite array of patterns and textures.
